We are pretty sure that this is how agency and corporate event teams would describe their job. A great deal of unpredictability and energy invested for the events to be as original and as creative as possible, a lot of fun for the guests and them going home with new contacts and business ideas.

Regardless of the occasion and venue, music at corporate events is always the star of the evening.

After a corporate event there isn’t a person who stays immune to sound, it is the element that is commented on the most and which raises much dust if it isn’t working out right.

If there are many people who known one another too loud music will make it hard for them to talk; the same goes for parties at which new contacts are made. Sophisticated, quality music is a must.

A string quartet is a specific type of ensemble. It dates back to the Middle Ages when it was used as courtly music for entertainment and dancing. At the time of the waltz at the court of Vienna there were no electric guitars, drums, DJs or lighting effects – violins, violas and cellos were the basis of the ensemble – people rejoiced and danced to the sounds of string instruments. What remains from those times is the fact that a string quartet is a symbol of elegance.

Just imagine, for a minute, musicians with string instruments and you will probably picture an atmosphere of dancing, of a court and ballroom gowns…maybe even a little bit of decadence? 

The elegance of the event is precisely the main reason behind choosing a string quartet. In the times when everything is noisy, fast and crowded, a discreet and sophisticated sound is great music to one’s ear. The music that the quartet plays at corporate events is just the right background for socializing, chatting, exchange of contacts – the very reasons why these events are organized. It is unobtrusive but refined and it will not leave anyone indifferent because people don’t often get a chance to hear a string quartet perform live. 

The String quartet’s song list can, of course, include classical music but also other genres such as tango, jazz, Latin music, evergreen, soundtrack music and, lately very popular – pop and rock remakes. Quartets are in high demand and each new contact with the corporate world proves to be mutually productive – clients’ needs generate new ideas.

What we know from experience is that the best weddings are those at which the bride and the groom are happy and relaxed, and that is the one thing you should focus on. Probably the most important moment at a wedding is when the guests see you for the first time, all dressed up and looking your best, lovingly smiling at each other and expecting the “I DO’s”. 

Music plays a much bigger part here than you may think, because it follows your steps and, just like in a movie, announces things. Then comes the first dance song, the dancing music, the “while you eat” music…did someone say cake?  It’ll be a challenge to reconcile different music tastes and organize a performance that everyone will enjoy, but the good thing is that you can combine different kinds of music!

You should first focus on choosing a song that your guests will first hear when you, as the bride and the groom, enter the space for the first time, and we have compiled a list of original suggestions for your walk in song  that you may find handy when planning.

While you’re in a positive mood you might also like to decide on your first dance song, choose from the tango or the waltz classics, romantic or alternative sound, pop and rock hits. Compromises are inevitable and, when it comes to some parts of the ceremony, you will probably want to take your in-laws’ advice or fulfill their wishes, but there is a time when it is important for you to have an absolute standard – and that is the music which creates the atmosphere at the very beginning of the celebration. It is the moment when everything changes, when a romantic relationship is formalized, when there is growing impatience, and at this point it is very important for the music to warm up the atmosphere but gently and gradually.

Experts have established that it is good to listen to ambient music for better and faster work with numbers but data entry is best done while listening to pop music. Dance music is recommended if your work involves problem solving, while classical music helps with work that involves attention to detail.

What’s best to listen to while doing your daily household chores? We have recommended some rhythms that go quite well with tidying up, dusting, scrubbing, vacuuming, ironing and, of course, cooking.

If you’ve noticed that writing, calculating or other kind of work that requires special concentration best goes with music without lyrics, then you’re on the right track – many of our friends and colleagues share the same opinion… It is widely known that classical music has a healing effect on the brain, that it stimulates studying and working, that it is very useful when babies and children listen to it, that plants grow faster and cows give more milk when listening to classical music. I was so surprised this summer when, passing by a barn on Mokra Gora, I heard the sounds of the 2^nd movement of one of Mozart’s piano concertos. Well done!

Japanese scientist Dr Masaru Emoto performed experiments with water, observing frozen drops with a microscope while playing different kinds of music. Do you know what happened? When he played classical music the water molecules formed perfectly shaped geometric figures, while the very opposite happened to the sounds of heavy metal. You can read about this experiment here, but you will find much more information in the book The Hidden Messages in Water. 

Scientists have also established that Mozart’s music is characterized by a flow of loud-quiet sounds in the thirty-seconds range, which corresponds to the biological currents of the human brain. This is what leads to the synchronization of the left and the right brain hemispheres resulting in relaxation, improved concentration and thinking ability. So, in this way, Mozart’s music helps you warm up your brain and it also helps certain complex neurological patterns that are engaged in your brain activities such as math and chess, for example.

The pulse and the flow of Baroque music bring peace and order and research has shown that this is due to the fact that Baroque music has 60 beats per minute that equally stimulate both brain hemispheres. It is believed that, by listening to Baroque music, it’s possible to improve work and studying performance by up to five times. For this reason my list contains many Baroque music pieces and I recommend versions played on Baroque instruments in the old, authentic, Baroque way.

If you are looking for studying music or for music while working in a noisy office or for work that requires additional stimulation, here’s a list of recommendations:

1. Tartini – Tartini’s most famous violin sonatas Devil’s Trill Sonata and Didone Abbadonata are an absolute no.1 on my list

2. Handel – Handel wrote the piece Water Music as a court composer as background music for King George I’s trip on the River Thames; it was used in experiments with students.
3. Vivaldi – this unusual composer’s instrumental music is perfect for work because its pulse is unobtrusive and string instruments always prevail. We recommend his Concerto Grosso, the Four Seasons, my favourite L’estro Armonico which is a set of 12 concertos and La Stravaganza
4. Bach – this great man’s music is described as music closest to God and, if you listen to it long enough, you will understand why. I don’t know what piece I would leave off the list, so you’d best start with this compilation
5. Mozart – Mozart is Mozart…speaking of him, have you heard of the Mozart effect?
6. In its expression, jazz is close to classical music, so it can also be a good recommendation. I personally like to listen to Miles Davis, so I suggest you start your music exploration with him
7. Pregnant women who are in need of concentration should give smooth jazz a try – that was my experience during pregnancy. I remember that, while I was pregnant, I wrote the best music for the quartet while listening to a radio station that played only smooth jazz
8. You’re writing invoices, documents, transfer orders? You might look for inspiration for work in chill music; Buddha Bar compilations are widely acclaimed.
9. Soundtrack music deserves a place on the list. Of course, not every soundtrack, but pieces by musicians such as Morricone, Williams, Horner and other artists can be very useful in creative work.
10. At the average, we concentrate in 20-minute segments. With the help of neurologists and psychology professors, The company Focus At Will has established that there is some music that functions as a focus enhancer. With the help of the music that they suggest people can work up to 100 minutes before taking their first break!

So far we’ve had a chance to be the secret ingredient at several alternative weddings and we succeeded in helping make this day very special for people who are not too fond of mainstream music. They asked for the playlist to include songs such as The Cure – Just Like Heaven, Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus, Style Council – Shout to the Top, The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, U2 – With or Without You… and we truly enjoyed ourselves while playing these songs arranged for a string quartet.

This year Mećavnik hosted many celebrities such as Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky, Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, the famous Nikita Mikhalkov, French director Bertrand Tavernier, the director of the Cannes festival, Thierry Frémaux, and other prominent guests from the world of film.

Shown in the competition program were 17 films from all parts of the world. Midnight at Küstendorf was reserved for music. Moldavian trumpet player Adam Stinga, blues guitarist Ana Popović, the band Partibrejkers and the Romanian orchestra Taraf de Haïdouks all had their performances.

The Wonder Strings Quartet was in charge of the music in between the film showings and workshops. In the magical, bohemian atmosphere of the Damned Yard café the guests were able to enjoy the amazing sounds of the band reinforced by Sale R.’s percussions. This was an opportunity for the Quartet to present its diverse repertoire and energy so the Festival guests were overjoyed. The third day of the Festival was reserved for a ceremonious lunch in Andrićgrad where the Wonder girls played for some of the currently most renowned people from the world of film such as Nikita Mikhalkov, Alfonso Cuarón, Bertrand Tavernier, Bahman Ghobadi, Warwick Thornton, producer Alex Garcia and others. It is interesting to note that the Wonder Strings Quartet also performed instead of the Partibrejkers band who had to cancel their concert, so the girls had the honour to perform in the main part of the program on the big stage.

As many as 1500 experts, users of new IT solutions, students, IT enthusiasts, representatives of public institutions, company managers and journalists had the opportunity to hear 70 lecturers from 13 different countries, of whom 40 from Serbia. The conference included 90 sessions focusing on various topics in the field of communication technologies and over 100 hours of lectures. Some 50 journalists reported from the conference.

In addition to the technical part of the conference that takes place during the first two days, a meeting with public sector representatives was held on the third day. The last, fourth day of the conference focused on business and the development of the IT sector in Serbia, aimed at improving the local market’s competitiveness on the global map and creating good ideas and plans for a better development of the IT industry in the country and the region. The conference also hosted meetings with organisations of the non-governmental sector, the NGO Connection Day, which saw discussions on the possibilities of cooperation and accessibility of modern software that the Microsoft Company donates to non-governmental organizations throughout the world.
Along with many interesting lectures the new Sinergija 14 concept and space also opened an interactive discussion while a part of the money from this year’s Sinergija conference registration fees was donated as humanitarian assistance to those affected by the floods in Serbia.

The Wonder Strings Quartet performed at the Sinergija conference for the second consecutive year. Last year the Quartet performed at the welcoming cocktail part and this year it entertained the conference participants on the closing night.

Guests from France and Italy were taken on a tour of the Kalemegdan Fortress as one of the most interesting parts of Belgrade following which they enjoyed a mini-concert by the Wonder String Quartet in the Barutana venue.

In this extraordinary and unique space, surrounded by antiques from the beginning of the past century, Quartet members played the most enjoyable songs on their repertoire – a waltz from the film Amelie Poulain, rock and pop arrangements of songs such as the Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Supreme, Royals – all of which was accompanied by dancers with fire, as well as their own song Just for Wonder with ethno elements which the guests of France seemed to enjoy the most.

The idea of Festival founder Emir Kusturica is to promote as many as possible young and talented musicians, students of music academies and secondary schools in Serbia and the Republic of Srpska as well as for the Festival to become one of the most important European and international classical music festivals.

As many as 95 talented students competed this year for the gold, silver and bronze matryoshka, and the decision on the winners was made by a panel of judges comprising academician Isidora Žebeljan (chairperson), pianist Aleksandar Madžar and the dean and professor of the Novi Sad Academy of Arts, Mr. Zoran Krajišnik.

Renowned international classical music stars also held concerts at the three-day outdoor stage event – pianist Denis Matsuev and violinist Alena Baeva.

The Czech National Symphony Orchestra was also a guest of the festival and it performed, together with the No Smoking Orchestra, the opera from the film Time of the Gypsies. Three Russian cinematography classics were shown – Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Mirror, Roman Kachanov’s Cheburashka and Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba.

A diverse musical program was reserved for the evening hours, from Wonder Strings Quartet performances to jazz concerts. In this elite ambiance the Wonder String Quarter members had an opportunity and the pleasure to perform their own music and well-know remakes on their repertoire. This time around the Quartet was joined by their collage, percussionist Aleksandar Sale Radulovic, on the cajon.

Forty per cent of funds raised by the sale of the displayed items is earmarked for the further implementation of the Accessibility Audit Association’s project Your Right to Know which will enable free legal aid for hearing-impaired persons facilitating their better social integration.

Members of the Belgrade International Women’s Club (IWC) supported the event by means of donations and their presence. In 2013 the Club financed the Your Right to Know project which achieved extraordinarily good results.

Your Right to Know is a project of the Accessibility Audit Association which is successfully managed by Bojana Pavlović Jovanović who is, herself, fully hearing-impaired. In 2013 she continued work on the project with the Belgrade City Organisation of Deaf People through workshops, educational programmes and free legal aid for hearing-impaired people across Serbia.

Lovrić said that, in spite of the fact that these are hard times for art and that it has been displaced from all phases of people’s lives, at some point art will show its full splendour and value.

During breaks Quartet members spoke with Mrs. Dubravka Malohodžić who heads the organisation, about the life of women musicians in Serbia, how they balance their personal and professional lives, about the advantages of their job.

When selecting music for the occasion the Quartet decided on Tango Chromatique ( Michael McLean ) and original compositions Plum (Lev Ljova Zhurbin) and Just for Wonder ( Aleksandar Gajić ). Watch a video from this event!

Just like every time when humanitarian events are organized, the Wonder Strings were more than happy to accept the invitation extended by the dear ladies of the Blood Transfusion Institute. For all the great women who donated blood that day the Wonder Quartet with flute played romantic tunes from their repertoire.

The highlight of the 12th Fair, which is organized by the Wedding magazine, will certainly be one of the most popular happenings in town – a fashion show featuring wedding gowns worn by celebrities. Just like last year, the Celebrity Ladies in Wedding Dresses glamorous fashion show will be held the first evening of the Fair and many celebrities will walk down the runway in wedding dresses.

This year the Wonder Strings Quartet, this time also featuring flute, had the honour to open this glamorous fashion show. Quarter members wore wedding gowns of the Anabella company and Merry Ed shoes. The repertoire also included Michael McLean’s Rhumba for string quartet.

Members of the Wonder Strings Quartet have been developing this idea of an informal presentation of classical and related music through the project called The Belgrade Secret Weapon. Joining the Wonder Strings at their performances are their colleagues from various fields of music – percussionists, jazz singers, ethno musicians and others.

This time around the gig was held at a secret location in Vračar. On their arrival our guests were asked for a password and the event took place in a beautiful lounge-kind of space. Joining the quartet was its long-time associate, percussionist Aleksandar Sale Radulović who played the cajon. Take a peek!

Ovog puta svirka je održana na tajnoj lokaciji na Vračaru. Gosti su prilikom ulasku imali šifru, a ceo događaj se odigrao u prelepom salonskom prostoru. Our Wonder Quartet also participated, this time introducing a flute. We presented our wedding repertoire since this kind of music is increasingly gaining popularity in Serbia. Our mini-concert included pieces such as Mehdelssohn’s Wedding March, ‘O Sole Mio, Tango and the pop tune Sweet Dreams.

The Sounds of Mokranjac’s Successors is an event traditionally organized in Negotin at which young people who either began or completed their music education in Negotin take part. Most of them now work in Negotin or are studying or working abroad.

Pianist Milja Popovic began her education in Negotin and perfected it at the Novi Sad Academy of Arts. It was her idea to get in touch with the Wonder Strings Quartet and propose this joint project. Quartet members were more than happy to accept for they deeply believe that cooperation between musicians across Serbia is a must.

Pijanistkinja Milja Popović započela je svoje školovanje u Negotinu, a usavršila ga na Akademiji Umetnosti u Novom Sadu. Ona je došla na ideju da pozove Wonder strings kvartet na saradnju. Članice kvarteta oduševljeno su prihvatile poziv, jer su mišljenja da je potrebno što vise saradjivati sa muzičarima širom Srbije.

There were 12 fighters from Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, the Czech Republic and others. The Wonder String Quartet played during the announcement of the fighters. The repertoire that evening covered famous rock and heavy metal songs such as Thunderstruck, Stairway to Heaven, Eye of the Tiger, Black Dog, Viva La Vida and many others.

One of the favorites of the competition, Dušan Džakić, came out to the ring with the sounds of the song What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.

Instead of the classical string quartet, which has so far followed the actors during their performances, this year’s arrangement was something different. Instead of the first violin the flute was playing and it turned out that the combination of the flute and the strings sounds great!

In the first part of the concert the repertoire was composed of classical music – Haydn, Holst and A. Simic. In the second part of the concert the compositions from the repertoire of the string quartet were performed in tango, Latin, jazz manner: Adios Nonino, Girl from Ipanema, Rumba, etc. Particularly interesting was the performance of Michael Jackson’s composition Billie Jean by this quartet. In addition, in the second part Aleksandar Gajic’s compositions in ethno style were played. This was probably the only performance of its kind in our country.U prepunoj (i pretoploj) sali Studentskog kulturnog centra, 25. 06. 2012. održan je koncert Wonder kamernog sastava.

U prvom delu koncerta na repertoaru je bila klasična muzika – Hajdn, Holst i A. Simić. U drugom delu koncerta svirane su kompozicije sa repertoara gudačkog kvareta u tango, latino, džez maniru: Adios Nonino, Devojka sa Ipaneme, Rumba i dr. Posebno interesantno je bilo izvođenje kompozicije Bili Džin Majkla Džeksona u ovom sastavu. Pored toga, u drugom delu su se svirale i kompozicije Aleksandra Gajića u etno maniru. Ovo je bio verovatno jedini nastup ove vrste u našoj zemlji.

As a result of this a concert of the Wonder chamber ensemble comprising the Wonder String Quartet members and all the people who were, at some point or the other, a part of the Quartet, will be held on June 25, 2012 at 8 pm at the large concert hall of the Students’ Cultural Centre.Došli smo na ideju da bi bilo veoma interesantno da se kompozicije sa repertoara Wonder gudačkog kvarteta odsviraju u nesto većem sastavu. Ta ideja se dopala dirigentici Simonidi Dragović koja je izrazila želju da diriguje ovim ansamblom.

Kao rezultat toga 25. 06. 2012. u 20h u velikoj sali SKC-a odrzaće se koncert Wonder kamernog ansambla.

Ansambl čine članice Wonder string kvarteta kao i članice koje su tokom godina učestvovale u radu kvarteta.

Performed in the first part of the program will be Haydn’s Symphony No. 27 inG major, Gustav Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Faure’s Pavane and Henryk Czyz’s Canzona di Barocco.

Compositions performed in the second part of the program will include the works of Aleksandar Gajić, Aleksandar Simić, Ljova Lev Zhurbin, Miloš Simić and other rock, pop, jazz and tango music in the Wonder String Quartet repertoire.

U prvom delu programa sviraće se Hajdnova simfonija br.27. u G duru, St Paul’s suite Gustava Holsta, Foreova Pavana i Canzona di Barocco Henrika Čiža.

U drugom delu koncerta izvodiće se dela Aleksandra Gajića, Aleksandra Simića, Lev Ljova Zhurbina, Miloša Simića kao i druge kompozicije sa repertoara Wonder gudačkog kvarteta u rok,pop, džez i tango maniru.

The original lyrics for the song “You, Me and the Seine” were written by Irena Dečermić.Originalni tekst za pesmu Ti i ja i Sena napisala je Irena Dečermić. Miško Plavi je odmah zamislio da bi se gudači odlično uklopili u tu pesmu i tako je nastala saradnja sa Wonder gudačkim kvartetom.

Ove godine je snimljen i spot koji je nedavno objavljen. Kao specijalni gost, pesmu je otpevala Lena Kovačević.

Miško Plavi came up with the idea that string instruments would fit into the song really well and this led of cooperation with the Wonder String Quartet. A video was also shot this year. As a special guest, Lena Kovačević did the singing.
